Week 4: Mushroom Houses, Children's Pool, and Outdoor Dining

 Monday, January 25-Sunday, January 31

Time slips away from you during winter work--an indicator you are having a great time.

This week, Daniel completed a Liaison Event Disposition (LED) a change of notice sent out to the entire company for production revisions, Dillon has been comparing structural changes on the TAO designs, and Ioana has become a wizard at completing Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).

The weekday evenings have also been busy. Ioana has attended a number of Zoom meetings--including planning sessions for Sustained Dialogue (a club at Webb which meets weekly to discuss crucial topics such as race, gender, and sexual orientation) as well as alumni presentations on behalf of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee (check the following link for the presentation and an overview of Webb's DEI plan). Meanwhile, Dillon and Daniel have been trying to get ahead for next semester by working on their respective theses. Dillon is doing a feasibility analysis of a thermo-acoustic engine for shipboard use, and Daniel is working on a feasibility analysis of an airport ferry for New York City.

On Thursday, the boys took advantage of outdoor dining opening up and headed to Half Door Brewing Company with Chris Bal '20. Meanwhile, Ioana re-lived her childhood by watching Fate: The Winx Saga with Isa Hill '20 and Megan Green '18.

After some morning recycling which yielded a substantial sum of five dollars, the three musketeers headed to Torrey Pines to hike the Broken Hill Trail (brief aside--if each had to identify with one of the three musketeers Ioana would be Athos, Dillon would be D'Artagnan, and Daniel would be Aramis). Unfortunately, all Torrey Pines trails were closed due to the rain that had poured down the night before (who said it never rains in San Diego?). Still, the trio was able to get some lovely content for the blog.

Saturday we met up with some fellow Webbies, Tori Kim '23 and Minh Tran '22 at Black's Beach. There we went on the hunt for the Mushroom House. Originally named the Bell Pavillion, this guest house was built and designed in 1965 by Dale Naegle for Sam Bell of bell's Potato Chips and Genral Mills. It was given the name "Mushroom House" by surfers who were inspired by its odd shape. (Link for more information.)

Sunday morning the group headed to an early brunch at Isa's favorite brunch spot in La Jolla, Sugar and Scribe.

After a filling brunch, we took a walk in the vicinity to explore La Jolla. We first headed to the Children's Pool Beach. Protected from waves by a seawall, the Children's Pool Beach was intended to provide children with a safe place to swim and paddle. The seawall soon proved to be multipurpose as its protective properties proved ideal for harbor seals and sea lions.

After enjoying the blissfully uneventful sight of harbor seals basking in the sun, we explored further north to Shell Beach. Here, we had an impromptu photoshoot which yielded some magazine-worthy pictures (shoutout to Kerri).

After walking for so long Ioana got blisters, we returned to Isa's apartment for some downtime. There, we subjected the boys to the torturous experience of watching To All the Boys I Loved Before: Part II. Luckily, they got some ice cream out of it and some cuddles from Isa's cat Kraken.

We look forward to telling you all about the fun adventures that await us next (this) week! For now, our stomachs and bodies need a break.
